Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men

January 11, 2016

The founder of The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men, David Jones, has died. Founded in 1964, originally called The International League for the Preservation of Animal Filament, the Society did little to prevent cruelty to long-haired men, and its founder appears to have spent much of his life short-haired. Nonetheless, cruelty to long-haired men has notably declined since its inception, and you have to count that as a win for the Society, society, long-haired men, the women who love them, the women who — long-haired to begin with — like to dress up as long-haired men for Halloween, cancer patients, sellers of product, and 19th-century utopian social theorist Charles Fourier, who predicted that, in the future, long-haired and short-haired men would live together in peace, harmony, and, occasionally, erotic bliss. Sadly, cruelty by long-haired men increased precipitously during the same time period, which may explain why David Jones cut his hair, changed his name, and disappeared into the shadows of the Zeitgeist.
