Men With Complicated Handshakes

December 23, 2013

What does it say about them, that they have complicated handshakes?  How does it start? How does it end? What are they thinking? Are they really so complicated, the handshakes? It seems so to me. One guy, years ago, I saw him frequently, and always that handshake… I never mastered it. And not original, not different, a three-parter, probably the same three-parter that everyone else who does that does. A convention, easily memorized, like simple tune that even a music-box can play, but it eluded me, or I resisted it, as conventions prolonged beyond a single moment become unbearable. To hit the mark, okay, but not to go through a whole routine, to shuffle and dance from visible strings.

Is it aggression? Is it domination? Or is it truly a dance, and though one must take the lead, at least the first time, the goal, the offer, is a mutual thing, shared, cooperative, even utopian? Probably that, and although there is always an arrogance in taking that lead, a touching vulnerability lies beneath, some real desire for human engagement.

I don’t know. I’ll probably never understand men with complicated handshakes.
